Skin Needling

  • What is skin needling?

Skin needling or, as it’s otherwise referred to, microneedling, is a process designed to stimulate collagen production. It involves a device called a Dermapen, which finely punctures the skin and encourages collagen to form. This treatment was introduced to rejuvenate the skin and enhance its ability to self-repair.

  • What device do we use?

We use Dermapen which has been the market leader in professional microneedling equipment since 2011. The team of researchers have advanced microneedling technology. Dermapen is currently the only manufacturer to have patents on microneedling applications.

  • How many treatments do I need?

Typically, a person needs three to six microneedling treatments for the best outcome. Three to five monthly or biweekly treatments are recommended to achieve desired results. The number of treatments needed may vary based on the severity of the skin concern, its location, and the treatment plan used. The skin may continue increased collagen production for 3 to 6 months after microneedling treatment.

  • Does it hurt?

The level of pain experienced during the procedure varies from person to person. A topical anesthetic is used prior to the treatment. Some people may experience mild discomfort, while others may feel no pain. The procedure is generally well-tolerated by most people.

  • Is there down time?

Downtime after a Dermapen treatment is typically about three days.

    Recovery timeline

Day 1: Erythema and red appearance and severity will depend upon how aggressive the treatment was performed.

Day 2: A red or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Swelling may be more noticeable on the second day.

Day 3: Skin can be pink or normal color. Swelling subsides.

    Home care

    A. Wash the face thoroughly a few hours after treatment. Gently massage the face with tepid water (a shower can provide an easier ability to massage the face while washing at the same time), and remove all serum and other debris such as dried blood. Mineral makeup may be applied the following day.

    B. For the first 1-3 days the skin will be very dry and feel tight. Frequent use of a Hyaluronic Acid and PHYTO serum will help alleviate this.

    C. After 2-3 days patients can return to regular skin care products or as soon as it is comfortable to do so. Vitamin A products are optimal and suggested.

    D. Avoid alcohol-based toners for 10-14 days.

    E. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 10 days if possible.

  • After care

Do not expose yourself to the sun

After you have undergone your microneedling procedure, stay out of the sun and do not apply any sunscreen, due to the toxins that may be contained in the lotion. Post procedure, the skin channels are completely open, and any toxins contained in topical applicants may be harmful to you.

Do not use any “active ingredient” skin products

Post-procedure, avoid any skincare product that has active ingredients. These commonly include things like Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Retinol, and other similar agents. The skin will be highly sensitive and these products will only irritate it further.

    Use collagen-stimulating peptides

As microneedling serves to stimulate the production of collagen, the skin needs higher amounts of collagen than normal to recover optimally. Collagen Stimulating Peptides assist in that process, further aiding in the stimulation of collagen production.

Avoid the use of makeup after treatment

It is imperative that you let your skin “breathe” and recover for 24 hours after the procedure. The skin channels are open, and using a makeup brush can penetrate the pores, especially if they are very thin, causing further irritation. Using a makeup brush that has been used before can contaminate the skin and, consequently, lead to infections. Wait 24 to 48 hours before you apply face makeup to give your skin the necessary recovery time.

    Use a cooling face mask

After you have undergone microneedling, you may experience some skin inflammation or redness. Using a cooling mask will help reduce the inflammation or redness of the skin, giving you more comfort.

    Use an antioxidant serum

Antioxidant serums have properties that assist in healing the skin. Serums assist in soothing the skin and further reduce irritation.

    Avoid sweating

As you sweat the pores of your skin will reopen, and the bacteria on your skin may enter the skin punctures. This can lead to either a reaction or infection.

    Drink water

It is important to stay hydrated before and after your procedure to help your skin heal and rejuvenate faster.
